Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice

A hospice has to feel like a home, not a secure site. How the facilities team got the whole grounds in view, and footage in minutes, without the building feeling watched.

Healthcare & care homes Huddersfield 2026 CCTV Access control

A place that has to feel like home

Forget Me Not cares for children with life-shortening conditions, and for their families. People arrive at the hardest moments of their lives. Volunteers and staff come and go all day. The gardens and the grounds are part of the care, not a perimeter. Safety here cannot look like a gatehouse and a barrier. It has to be knowing who is on site, and being able to answer a question quickly when something happens, without any of it being visible to a family walking through the door.

Centurion had looked after the hospice’s access control for several years. The team knew the building, the people and the rhythm of a day there. That mattered for what came next.

When the old cameras stopped being enough

The CCTV had grown piecemeal. There were gaps across the grounds and the car park, and no way to tell which vehicle had come and gone. When the facilities team needed to check an incident, finding the right footage meant sitting at a recorder and scrolling. It could take a long time, and there was no simple way to save a clip or hand it to the police.

What the team asked for was easy to say and hard to do well. See the whole site. Know which vehicles are on it. Get to the footage that matters in minutes. And do all of it without the hospice feeling any different to the families who use it.

Designed around the hospice, not the hardware

The survey started with where people actually go: the entrances and exits, the perimeter, the car parks, the gardens and the communal spaces. Internal and external cameras were placed to cover those routes, with the discretion the setting demands.

At the entrance, ANPR cameras read number plates, so the team can see which vehicles have arrived and when, and review a visit in seconds rather than from memory.

The project uses Brivo and Eagle Eye cloud video. Authorised staff can see live and recorded footage from a desktop or phone, with search tools that help them find an incident. Cloud management can reduce the work of running local recording servers, but it does not remove on-site equipment or cybersecurity responsibilities. Cameras, connectivity and any local buffering equipment still need support. The hospice remains responsible for its user accounts, permissions, network and data-protection decisions, with the provider and installer responsible for the services agreed in their contracts. The system can be expanded as the site changes, subject to compatible equipment and the agreed service.

The installation was scheduled around the hospice’s day, working around families and care whenever asked.

The first time it mattered

The test of a system like this is the first incident after go-live. Now, when something happens on site, the facilities team can find the footage, save it, and share it securely with the police if they need to, from wherever they are. The ANPR record answers the question of which car it was before anyone has to ask it twice.

The same team that installed the system services and supports it. The people who understand the hospice’s sensitivities are the ones who come back.

“We can quickly find the footage we need, save it, and securely share it with the police when required. Their team are always understanding of the sensitivities of working in a hospice environment and work around us whenever required.”
