Illumina & HID simplify campus mobile credential adoption

Scottsdale, Az (USA)

Illumia, a leading provider of identity, commerce, payments, and foodservice technology across higher education, healthcare, and corporate campuses, and HID, a worldwide leader in trusted identity and access control solutions, have extended their existing partnership to make it easier and less expensive for colleges and universities to adopt mobile credentials.

The agreement brings HID mobile credential support to IDX, Illumia’s cloud platform, building on its existing availability with CS Gold, Illumia’s on-premises campus card system. As a result, CS Gold customers adopting HID mobile credentials now can later migrate them to IDX.

For schools, the partnership helps separate two technology decisions that have traditionally been closely linked: modernising the campus card platform and replacing physical access infrastructure. Where compatible HID readers are already installed, institutions can preserve that investment as they transition to IDX, reducing the cost, complexity and disruption associated with migrating to mobile.

"Campus technology rarely changes all at once," said Don Smith, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Higher Education. “Illumia’s expanded HID partnership gives schools more options to cost effectively adopt mobile credentials today with Illumia’s IDX and CS Gold platforms while giving them the flexibility to move to the cloud on their own timeline.”

The agreement comes as colleges and universities accelerate their cloud plans. Illumia’s 2025 Higher Ed Innovation Index, developed with Hanover Research, found that 80% of institutions planned to fully migrate their core systems to the cloud within 24 months.

"Door access infrastructure is built to last, and campuses need technology that works with what they already have,” said Daniel Gundlach, Vice President PACS, North America at HID. “By extending HID mobile credential support to IDX, we’re ensuring our ecosystem continues to support existing readers while expanding how institutions can deliver secure, mobile-first access experiences.”
