Power Your Edge Devices at Any Distance
Power to the Edge
Data alone isn’t good enough
From HD cameras and Wi-Fi ® hotspots to small cells and digital signage, it takes more than data to support your connected network. The proliferation of IP-connected network devices in the enterprise has not only driven the need for faster data rates but increased power, as well. And the need for more power to more areas of the network — to the edge and beyond — is rapidly growing, testing the limits of standardized power over Ethernet (PoE) and increasing the need for new, more innovative power/data solutions.
The increasing diversity of IT/OT devices — LED lighting, IP phones, RFID security, building management systems and more —creates new and exciting opportunities for the enterprise, as well as the challenge of delivering remote power over existing cabling. Unlocking that potential starts now.
Extended power use cases are everywhere
PoE set the standard
Since its introduction in the late 1990s, PoE has become the standard for safely transmitting electrical power and data over a single Ethernet cable; PoE standards specify Category 3 while CommScope highly recommends Cat 6A for headroom.
PoE converts the mains power supply to a low-voltage current which is applied as a common voltage to each twisted pair. The current is then transmitted over structured cabling to PoE-enabled devices. Because twisted-pair Ethernet uses differential signaling, the power and data signals do not interfere. This makes PoE a cost-effective way to transmit power to a wide range of devices without disrupting the data signal.
Smaller cables and connectors, relative to AC line power components, that enable higher density
Support for continuous monitoring of the circuit for faults and other operating conditions
Installing low-voltage cabling is usually safer and less costly than adding an AC power feed
Improved control and operation of devices for better facility management
Power delivery and data synergistically enable intelligent infrastructure, UPS backup and better reliability

How we can help
We’ve got you covered—and then some
CommScope gives you more ways to take your power further. Shielded and unshielded Cat 6A and unshielded Cat 6 solutions that support PoE ++ up to 250 meters; powered fiber that takes Class 8 power even further; and a totally out- of-the-box enterprise platform that combines copper and fiber to support 1,800 watts over hundreds of meters.
SYSTIMAX® GigaSPEED® X10D or GigaSHIELD™ X10D, Cat 6A cable, supports Class 8 PoE up to 100 m
SYSTIMAX GigaREACH™ XL, extended reach Cat 6, supports Class 8 PoE up to 250 m
SYSTIMAX FiberREACH™, powered fiber, supports Class 8 PoE up to 350 m, bandwidth of 1 Gbps
SYSTIMAX Constellation™ platform, up to 1800 W (fault-managed power) over hundreds of meters to consolidation points, then Cat 6/6A PoE to devices
So, how do you know which one is right for you?
Manage your powered connections with imVision ®
CommScope imVision automated infrastructure management (AIM) system plays a key role in managing PoE connections. It provides real-time visibility, documentation and control for data and power delivery across structured cabling systems.
imVision tracks:
The number of cables in each bundle
Which cables are connected to power sourcing equipment (PSE)
Cables actively delivering PoE
PoE use and allocation per cable
imVision System Manager lets you:
Specify PoE type when provisioning
Automatically search for available ports that meet the required power level
Re-route or upgrade connections if the desired PoE level is unavailable
imVision dashboards display:
PoE availability per outlet or location
Percentage of outlets with PoE access
PoE switch port capacity and utilization
Underutilized PoE switch ports to help optimize infrastructure investments
Standards compliance and safety
imVision monitors bundle sizes and power distribution to help ensure compliance with TIA™, ISO™, and CENELEC™ standards that recommend limiting bundle sizes to prevent overheating. Overheating can degrade cable insulation and increase attenuation, potentially leading to performance issues or warranty liabilities.
Power to the edge takeaways
The recent introduction of new connectivity options—Wi-Fi 6/6E/7, 5G, shared spectrum and more—is fueling increased deployment of converged IoT/OT edge devices. These include IP security cameras, LED lighting and 4K/HD digital signage, intelligent building management systems, access control sensors, location services and more. Meanwhile, 5G-enabled smart home systems are gaining market traction, as well. They all need power, and the CommScope portfolio of extended power solutions provides multiple options. From Class 8 Cat 6 and Cat 6A Ethernet to the long-reach capability of powered fiber and the innovative Constellation building edge infrastructure platform, our solutions allow you to design and install a power-wise capable infrastructure with confidence. And with our imVision AIM platform, we help you manage your network power for maximum ROI.
