Security Solutions for Public Spaces

When it comes to high-profile locations with high footfall such as football stadiums or shopping centres, it’s important to have the right security solutions in place to protect the public from potential attacks.

Each location will have its own unique challenges, but with our wide range of permanent and temporary solutions and a long history of securing high-profile sites, we can help you protect what matters most.

Shopping Centres

Potential target

The risk of shopping centres being targeted by an act of terrorism is very real. Due to high volumes of people being in a concentrated area at any one time, all vehicle approaches must be considered and secured. Pedestrian areas must also be segregated to avoid any accidental collisions outside a busy shopping centre.

Mitigating against an attack

Traffic calming measures can be used in conjunction with perimeter security and access control measures. To successfully mitigate against a planned attack. Access in and out of car parks needs to be planned as well as access for vehicles into service areas which could, if not considered cause a vulnerability in your sites defence.

Selecting the right security measures

Aesthetics of security measures chosen should be considered and be in keeping with the overall environmental design. If security measures are being retrofitted around existing infrastructure, solutions can be selected to be installed quickly and efficiently to minimise any disruption to the daily running of the centre.

Bespoke solutions

ATG Access specialises in bespoke, engineered security solutions. Many clients have an explicit aesthetic requirement for a site or a specific site constraint. ATG is used to resolving these challenges. Alternatively we have our standard range of high security bollards and barriers.

Critical infrastructure

Hotels have been identified as critical national infrastructure and as such require the appropriate level of perimeter protection and access control security measures to keep guests and employees safe from a targeted attack.

Avoiding a fortress mentality

There is a desire to make places of leisure as accessible as possible to ensure there is always a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Security measures must not be intrusive and must operate within the day-to-day running of a hotel. It’s important to avoid a ‘fortress mentality’.

Balancing security and accessibility

The prevention of effective flow of pedestrians or vehicles in and out of an area is crucial. There is however a balance to be achieved where those responsible for security are comfortable that there are robust protective security measures available to mitigate against the threat of terrorism or accidental vehicle impact.

Retrofitting older infrastructure

For some new infrastructure, counter-terrorism measures are written into planning permission for the construction of new hotels. There is also a retro-fit requirement on older infrastructure. Key stakeholders have a responsibility for the security and safety of their guests and staff.

The challenges of securing a stadium

With multiple access points for vehicles and pedestrians, securing a stadium is challenging. Attention needs to be paid to all of the possible vehicle approaches around the stadium. Ideally, pedestrians should be segregated from vehicles with their own entrance to provide optimum safety.

Fixed, high-security bollards installed along a stadiums perimeter do not prohibit pedestrian movement. Thought needs to be given to the height and visibility of installed bollards to ensure they are obvious to pedestrians in a crowd of people. The position of bollards needs to be lines that run perpendicular to pedestrian desire lines to ensure the flow rate still remains at its peak.

Temporary measures

Temporary high-security measures can also be provided. If a stadium is only considered at risk of a terrorist attack during certain high profile planned events. Temporary measures can be deployed very quickly and efficiently and can be installed with minimal surface damage. There are many security objectives and considerations when protecting a stadium so it is important you go through a thorough design stage initially.
